I wish I was a thinker

I’ve noticed that people react very differently in conversation. Some pause first, ask a question, or just listen until the other person is done. Then there are people who pull the conversation toward themselves without meaning to, because something in your story reminds them of their own. Some automatically take the opposite view, because thinking against the grain is how they work things out. And some people start talking the moment they hear something. They already have an opinion.

That’s me.

When someone tells me something, there’s almost immediately a response in my head. An opinion, a next step. Sometimes the answer is there before I’ve really finished listening. And I say it. Not because I need to be right, but because that’s just how it works for me. Thinking and speaking are barely separate things.

I have people around me who do it differently. I watch how they enter a conversation. They ask questions where I would’ve already moved on. They let a silence sit where I would’ve filled it. And it works. The other person feels heard, the conversation goes somewhere, without anyone steering it.

I admire that. I really do. What strikes me is the timing. They choose their moment, and because of that, what they say carries more weight.

Because sometimes people just want to talk. No solution, no other angle. Just someone there. In those moments, my reflex to say something right away is the least useful thing I can do. I’ve felt that. Said something, watched it not land, not because it was wrong but because it was too soon. These days I sometimes catch that moment before I speak. But not always.

It is what it is. It’s also part of what made me.

Being this way has gotten me somewhere. Opportunities I took because I didn’t think them to death first. Decisions that were easier because I knew where I stood. People who always knew what to expect from me, and who seemed to appreciate that. I’ve rarely regretted being direct. Being too quick, sometimes. But that’s a different thing.

Luckily, I have enough people around me who do pause. Maybe I don’t need to be the thinker.
